The Art of Reading. Danger.

"To read is to risk making one's self vulnerable...A man may not be consciously aware that to read another man's body is dangerous, but subconsciously he is aware. He is also aware that to read another man's body raises the possibility that another man may attempt to read his, and perhaps in the reading find him wanting. "

I think this is a very relevant observation but would like to know in which context the quote has been made, since one can read so much into it.

The context is the body of the text and the body as text. Primarily, the context would be gender: how the male gaze looks at other males. But it also, to me, relates to reading and how a text can threaten, intimidating the reader by its content and structure. Thanks for visiting, Abha.

Very interesting. I have always been fascinated by how we treat/think of our bodies. Would be unfamiliar with 'the male gaze on the male gaze',but do understand what you talk about, thinking of the 'female gaze on the female gaze'.or even between the two genders for that matter. Thanks.
